SUNDAY Get an early start because we're heading for the sea! Watch for the charming village of Ogunquit, also known as "The Marginal Way". Enjoy a leisurely afternoon to browse the quaint shops and stroll the walking paths at picturesque Perkins Cove. Our accommodations are at the luxurious Meadowmere Resort. (CB,D) MONDAY Journey up the coast this morning to Bath to visit the Maine Maritime Museum. Learn about Maine's shipbuilding industry from the 1600s to the present. Enjoy the view of the cove and the fresh seafood for lunch at the Taste of Maine Restaurant, a local favorite. Remember the movie "The Shawshank Redemption"? Our next stop is at the Maine State Prison Store, where inmate-crafted goods are for sale. Bar Harbor has been celebrated for its breathtaking beauty since it was discovered in 1604 by Samuel de Champlain, who named it "Isle de Mounts Desert" for its bare desert-like mountaintops. Our hotel for the next two nights, the Kimball Terrace Inn, has a marina view of beautiful Northeast Harbor. Dinner this evening is at the Main Sail Restaurant located adjacent to the Inn. (CB,L,D) TUESDAY Explore Acadia National Park with a local guide. Witness Thunder Hole and view the park from the summit of Cadillac Mountain, the first place the sun touches our country every morning. This afternoon, set sail on a nature sightseeing cruise on Frenchman's Bay. In addition to seeing the spectacular homes nestled atop the ocean cliffs, search for eagles, porpoises, seals and lots of other marine life. A bit of free time is planned to explore or shop in the village of Bar Harbor. Get a different view of Acadia by horse-drawn carriage over miles of roads developed by President Roosevelt. Feast on a traditional down east lobster bake tonight. (B,D) WEDNESDAY Depart the coast and travel through Maine's other jewel, the mountains and lakes region. Relax as we wind along those backroads surrounded by the brilliance of autumn. Stop in the village of Littleton, New Hampshire, home of the Chutter General Store and the World's Largest Candy Counter. See spectacular views of Franconia Notch State Park and Cannon Mountain from an enclosed aerial tram ride. Evening finds us in Waterville Valley for dinner and a cozy night's sleep at the Golden Eagle Lodge. (B,D) THURSDAY Visit Sugarbush, a real working hilltop farm that produces cheese products and, of course, maple syrup. Tour the sugarhouse and learn how maple syrup is made and also watch as the cheese packers wrap and hand wax the cheese. Take a leisurely stroll through the quaint village of Woodstock, Vermont. This afternoon the Billings Farm and Museum is a premier working dairy farm and living history museum of Vermont's rural past. Evening finds us in Rutland, Vermont. (B,D) FRIDAY We can't leave Vermont without visiting the New England Maple Museum, with the largest collection of maple sugaring artifacts in existence. Then it's off to the Vermont Marble Exhibit, the world's largest marble museum, illustrating the origin, quarrying, and finishing of marble. Crossing back into New York State, our last night out will be spent in Utica. (B,D) SATURDAY Continuing west, watch the beautiful autumn colors, especially at Paschke's Mum Farm. Returning home, you'll agree that Fidelity found great spots on these "Backroads of New England." |
